‘Sans Tain’ (French for One Way Mirror) is a photography series realised during my travels through Malaysia and Indonesia. It is entirely inspired by a sentence heard there, “You are lucky to have a chance to come visit us and see our life, but we will never be able to come visit you”. Influenced and impressed by this unknown world, I question the nature of the relationship between Asia and Europe. My wish to bring a piece of Asia and it’s people here, even in a figurative way, is in the heart of this series.
The eyes of the people on every photo are systematically hidden. Seeing the eyes of those people won’t tell us anything more about them. Probably visiting their country won’t either. Being born and raised in a modern country with all goods, we are looking on their life through a ‘golden filter’, calling it ‘exotic’… However, we often forget that it is someone’s daily life and not a simple summer adventure.
